As the Food and Beverage manager for Virgin Atlantic, Shiada is an experienced drinks judge - so she is well aware of the quality and diversity that's on offer to the public nowadays - and the energy that's on show in non-alc in particular. 'It's a pleasure to taste new and upcoming innovation,' she says.

That same energy makes it hard for her to pick a favourite category - there's simply such a lot happening - but when pushed she plumps for botanical spirits where she thinks that the best brands are creating 'pure magic and elevating the drinking experience'. Wine, however, is the category that she's probably the most interested in judging. 'Wine is one of my favourite subjects,' she says, 'and I am excited to see the alc-free wine category develop.' 

As a keen bird-watcher in her (limited) spare time, she'll doubtless be scrutinising the entries with the same keen eye that she brings to her feathered friends - and hoping that a few of them really fly.
